About Josh Chan Therapist In Training
All relationships impact one another shaping the way we treat ourselves. Real and perceived responsibilities we have to our caregivers, partners, and those we value condition us to behave accordingly. Patterned behaviors stem from lessons learned from these relationships; moments in our upbringing that felt affirming or caused pain reinforce these behaviors and teach us how to be in future relationships. Transforming the patterns that no longer serve us in our relationships takes great courage, but the joy is in the process of intentionality. Together, we can work towards greater acceptance of a self-image that is not tainted by the preferences of others, and build connections with more authenticity.
I am committed to guiding you and your loved ones through the many wonderful facets of human emotions that socialization has encouraged us to siphon off as good or bad. Through humanistic and experiential approaches, like mindfulness and breath work, we can better sit with any initial reactivity without judgment and allow for curiosity toward what lies beneath. Using techniques from internal family systems (IFS), we can explore the different parts of our inner selves that contribute to our interactions with others. By examining our core values and the roles we assume in our relationships, we can begin to unravel the recursive patterns in our relationships and create space for growth and transformation.
As someone who has personally experienced the complexities of life as a gay, Asian immigrant of faith, I am committed to building a safe, inclusive therapeutic relationship where you can feel heard, accepted, and celebrated with all of your unique identities and strengths. Marriage & Family Therapist
Marriage & Family Therapist
In Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), the unit of treatment isn’t just the person – even if only a single person is interviewed – it is the set of relationships in which the person is embedded. MFTs take a holistic perspective to health care; they are concerned with the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families.
Marriage and Family Therapists are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems and licensed to assess and treat mental and emotional disorders. They do so within the context of all relationship structures including marriage, couples and family systems. Marriage and family therapists treat a wide range of serious clinical problems including: depression, marital problems, anxiety, individual psychological problems, and child-parent problems.
After receiving treatment, almost 90% of clients report an improvement in their emotional health, and nearly two-thirds report an improvement in their overall physical health. A majority of clients report an improvement in their functioning at work.
