About Ben Sheff Therapist In Training

Exploring the relationships and systems in which we are a part of is a necessary part of healing. Relationships shape our foundations; they have the potential to provide the greatest joy imaginable but can also become a source of tumultuous struggle. It takes great bravery for couples or individuals to take the step of entering therapy, but the rewards of this work can be immense. My goal is to develop a collaborative, non-pathologizing space for you to connect, communicate and navigate through conflict with those you love.

A native of the Boston area, I have lived in many parts of the country, but New York has been my home since 2013. Originally drawn here by my pursuits in the performing arts, my training and experience as an actor has informed my current work as a therapist. In addition to my love of theater, I am avidly active in the outdoors and can frequently be found surfing, hiking, and skiing. I have always been driven to understand and validate the emotional lives of those around me and have learned that embracing and prioritizing our sources of joy is vital to our well-being.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist in training completing my master’s degree at Iona University, I’m driven by curiosity and kindness. Influenced by Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Trauma Informed Care, I draw from my training and lived experience to meet you where you are. I understand that those in marginalized communities have faced unique challenges navigating their identity; with sensitivity to the intersections of race, ethnicity, orientation, gender, social class, and ability, together we will discover greater fulfillment and deeper connection with yourself and in your relationships.

Marriage & Family Therapist

Marriage & Family Therapist

In Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), the unit of treatment isn’t just the person – even if only a single person is interviewed – it is the set of relationships in which the person is embedded. MFTs take a holistic perspective to health care; they are concerned with the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families.

Marriage and Family Therapists are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems and licensed to assess and treat mental and emotional disorders. They do so within the context of all relationship structures including marriage, couples and family systems. Marriage and family therapists treat a wide range of serious clinical problems including: depression, marital problems, anxiety, individual psychological problems, and child-parent problems.

After receiving treatment, almost 90% of clients report an improvement in their emotional health, and nearly two-thirds report an improvement in their overall physical health. A majority of clients report an improvement in their functioning at work.
