As we begin to get honest with one another, we recognize old stories from our relationship, our families modeling, and our cultures expectations that limit our potential for greater understanding and connection. Couples and relational therapists take a non-blaming, impartial stance in order to help shift the problems in clients lives from a singular issue to a relational dynamic. In interpersonal therapy, the relationship is the “client,” affected by each individuals past experiences, present feelings and future aspirations. We are better able to collaborate in overcoming obstacles if the burden of fault is less overbearing for one individual. Practicing intentionality and accountability can foster a shared responsibility for the future. A couples therapist acts as a guide in the healing process, creating a safe space to explore greater vulnerability with one another.

Given the choice, many of us avoid change. Even if we are suffering, we privilege stability, cozying up to the familiar even when it is no longer serving us. We may cling to ways that we have coped historically that are in fact hurting us now. We might find ourselves continuing to return to situations that do not make us feel whole, but rather denigrate our self-worth. We may be too frighted to voice our resistance in the face of adversity, choosing time and time again to settle because we fear we are irrevocably damaged. Or, most insidious, we might downplay our own pain, our own humanity, diminishing the hurt we feel in order to survive or fit in. Left out of control, this devaluing of self creeps into every aspect of life, reeking havoc in its wake.

Over the past two years we have all experienced some form of isolation, fear, loss and lack of control. Adhering to the “new normal” of a world with COVID-19 has cut out many of the ways we keep ourselves in balance – through socialization, exercise, fresh air, creativity and celebration. It has caused us to have to grapple with new stressors and, for many, to question old ways of living, working or relating. Some may still feel stuck between what once was and who they hope to become. For other’s this seismic life-shift has created new space for discovery in relationships, at work, and within ourselves. Now is a wonderful time to invest in yourself and unlock your full potential.

In Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), the unit of treatment isn’t just the person – even if only a single person is interviewed – it is the set of relationships in which the person is embedded. MFTs take a holistic perspective to health care; they are concerned with the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families.

Marriage and Family Therapists are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems and licensed to assess and treat mental and emotional disorders. They do so within the context of all relationship structures including marriage, couples and family systems. Marriage and family therapists treat a wide range of serious clinical problems including: depression, marital problems, anxiety, individual psychological problems, and child-parent problems.

After receiving treatment, almost 90% of clients report an improvement in their emotional health, and nearly two-thirds report an improvement in their overall physical health. A majority of clients report an improvement in their functioning at work.
